Meet Sam K

Insurance to Logistics

The theme this month in our Associate Spotlights (unintentionally) seems to be centered around our associates that didn’t necessarily join our team with logistics experience. Sam Kathman is no exception to that.

Sam K, as he’s referred to in our office, was born and raised in Northern Kentucky before going to college at Ole Miss in Oxford, MS. He studied accounting and insurance and spent several years working in both of those fields before joining our team here at PGT earlier this year.

Sam is a family man and very proud of it. He has two incredible parents, Maria and David, and two younger sisters, Ellie and Abbey. Their family dog is a goldendoodle named Franklin. Outside of the office, Sam enjoys playing golf and cards with his family and friends. Sam was also on SportsCenter one as the top play of the day (although it was for all the wrong reasons)!

“I pride myself in making and maintaining great relationships with my customers,” Sam shared. “I am motivated by providing them with excellent service on a daily basis. It’s a great feeling!”

The camaraderie at PGT is one his favorite things about working here. “I feel it every time I come into the office because everyone really gets along with each other well.” He enjoys working alongside the team we have put together and looks forward to adding some new members to build on that.

Sometimes taking that leap of faith into a new career path can be scary. Sam’s best advice: just do it. He did and it has worked out well for him and for PGT. Sam explained why: “Whether you have experience in the industry or not, you will immediately surround yourself with people that not only have an interest in your professional success, but in your personal growth as well.” It really is an atmosphere that sets everyone up for success.

“You feel like you are part of something bigger than yourself and I am confident that you will feel the same if you set the fear aside and jump on board with us.”

Furbaby Love

National Dog Mom Day

We don’t usually post on Saturdays, but we had to make the exception this week. If you know any dog moms, you know they have to take every opportunity they can to post about their furbabies. And guess what? The one writing this blog is obsessed with hers, so that calls for an extra post 🙂

Meet Kandra's Dogs!

Belle aka Belley Girl, was her baby girl. She had her for 14 amazing years before they recently lost her. She was the most loyal dog and could always tell how much you meant to her just by looking into her eyes. She was the best dog! Then there’s the brothers, Beasley aka B and Bentley aka Puppa (dog’s can’t have just one name, in case you didn’t know that). Beasley has more brown and is slightly bigger. He’s the older one at 9 years old. He just wants love and will bring you a toy every time he sees you. He loves to cuddle. The baby is Bentley and he’s quite the stinker, probably because he always gets his way. He wants all the love and attention and usually gets it because everyone loves him.

Meet Cassie's Child....oops, Dog!

Bullitt is her baby. He turned 11 earlier this year, but you’d never know. He’s a ball of energy constantly- hence the dog tag “cute but psycho.” He loves jeep rides with the doors off, “pup-cups” from his favorite coffee shops, and running circles around her godchild every time he sees him. He knows all kinds of tricks- sit, lay down, paw, roll over, speak, high five, and he can even pray! He loves running around outside at grandma’s and sleeping on anyone’s lap as long as they have a blanket for him to lay on. He’s a pain in the butt a lot of times, but he really has been the best dog. He doesn’t know a stranger, so he will never be a guard dog, but just give him an ounce of attention and you will have a new best friend for life.

Sponsor

Go St. Paul Panthers!

Earlier this year, PGT decided to become a sponsor of St. Paul in Florence, KY. St. Paul is a Catholic school that relies on the support of the local communities in order to purchase and upgrade technology, building changes, and athletic and academic equipment.

We believe it is important to support our youth in athletics, but more importantly, in academics and spiritual growth as that will be what carries most through the rest of their lives.

With our sponsorship, and the sponsorships of many others, St. Paul is been able to purchase items like new awnings, new PA system throughout the school, and much more. Without the community support, these things wouldn’t be possible.

The Power of PGT

Why PGT?

We can tell you everything you want to hear about PGT over and over until we are blue in the face.

Or we could let you hear from our associates directly. We decided to go this route, because, well it’s more fun!

We sat down with each of our associates and let them say what they wanted to say about PGT. You’ll hear a variety of stories, but you’ll get a different perspective on why each person chose to take a leap of faith with PGT and why they continue as a valuable member of our team.

It’s unscripted – I promise! (Although, I think most would have preferred a script!)

Today we are sharing the Power of PGT according to Brandon. Give it a listen.

Roadcheck

Safety Blitz 2022

No time like the present to prepare. In fact, time is running out to prepare for the national truck safety blitz. How will it impact you? When will you start to feel the impact? How long will it last? Why does it impact you at all? We will answer those questions and more.

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Administration (CVSA) conducts safety blitzes across North America around this time every year. They work closely with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)- an organization we are all too familiar with.

What’s the point? At their core, roadchecks are conducted to promote safety of all drivers, pedestrians and shipments on the highways. The CVSA partners with local highway patrol and inspectors at various inspection/weigh stations as well as temporary inspection checkpoints.

What are they checking for? There’s a primary focus every year, but it ranges from mechanical issues commonly found on commercial vehicles to driver credentials, health, and HOS compliance. This year, the focus is on wheel-end components. By narrowing the focus to one or two items, they are able to operate at maximum efficiency. To put that into perspective: the CVSA and their partners have been able to inspect about 15 trucks EVERY MINUTE.

When is it? This year, it will begin Tuesday, May 17 and run through the evening of Thursday, May 19.

What will we start feeling the impact? Traditionally, the greatest impact is felt that entire week, but it often starts as early as the week before. For planning purposes, prepare yourself for impact to start as early as May 11 and continue through May 22.

“Truck capacity will tighten. Rates will escalate for a short period of time but will certainly bounce back. It would be a good idea to get ahead of freight the week before and game plan with your logistics providers.” – Taylor Allen, Logistics Coordinator

Why does it impact you? Truck drivers hate blitz week. It isn’t uncommon for carriers to sit out that week. Regardless, capacity becomes extremely tight and rates tend to skyrocket. If drivers are going to run during a safety blitz, they are going to demand more money to do so. If not, it’s not worth their hassle most of the time.

Culture

What it's like at PGT

Family.

Kind of cliché, right? Maybe. But that’s just the reality of working at PGT.

In today’s Table Talk, Kandra, Taylor & Jake talk about the culture at PGT and what you can expect.

Mother’s Day

Happy Mother's Day!

Sundays are for associate spotlights, so what better spotlight today than all the PGT moms that help keep us all going. Moms wear many hats in their personal lives, and that generally carries over into their professional lives. That is no different at PGT. We are proud of all of the moms in our office and appreciate everything they do for all of us!

Thank-you to all four of you- Cheryl, Katie, Kandra & Jenn! We hope you have the best day today! You deserve it.

Cheryl had a huge part in getting PGT up and going two years ago. She keeps things flowing every day and ensures we are all able to make coffee every day!

“I love my daughters, but being a Nana is the best gig ever.”

– Cheryl Adkins –

Katie helps keep the boss-man in line better than anyone! She holds down the fort and is always there to answer questions & help anytime!

“I’m proud of many things I’ve accomplished in my life, but nothing beats being a mom!”

– Katie Uhrina –

Kandra is the one who tries to keep everyone in line. She’s definitely the “office mom” of the group & truly cares about everyone.

“My kids are my world. Being their mom is the greatest gift God could have ever given me.”

– Kandra Dauwe –

Jenn does a little bit of everything around here, so everyone tends to go to her for help. She is always willing to step up and help anyone!

“Mom is my favorite title. I love my kids more than they will ever know!”

– Jennifer Sloan –

Community Matters

Kentucky Storm Elite

If you haven’t noticed in the weekly Staff Spotlights, sports, in some fashion, are a passion of a lot of people in our company. It only makes sense that PGT recently took the opportunity to support a local AAU basketball team in the tristate. The Kentucky Storm Elite is a local boys team that travels across the country to follow their passion for playing basketball together.

As a sponsor, PGT was able to help drive the cost down for the players so they didn’t have to take that burden on themselves. The cost of playing any sort of travel sports is extremely high, so we try to help in any way we can. The last thing we want is for someone to be unable to participate on a team because they cannot afford it.

Good luck to the Kentucky Storm Elite! Bring some trophies home, but more importantly, enjoy the competition, the camaraderie, and memories you are creating with your friends and family! We can’t wait to hear how the season goes!
