Ladies in Logistics

It's time for a change!

Logistics is commonly referred to as a “man’s world.”

We’re here to change that.

There are about 125 million people in the Logistics & Supply Chain industries across the globe. Do you know how many of them are female? LESS THAN FIVE PERCENT!

Depending on who you ask, the number ranges from 2 to 4.5%. That’s crazy when you actually sit and think about it.

PGT is proud to say that almost 20% of our associates are women. That’s a great step, but we don’t think it’s enough. We would love to add more women to our staff- they bring a completely different dynamic and atmosphere.

In an effort to encourage more women to take the leap into the industry, we are going to start a new segment spear headed by Kandra Dauwe- Ladies in Logistics!

Each month we will be introducing one of our LILs (Ladies in Logistics), so you can get to know them, what they are about, and what they are achieving in the logistics world. We will be discussing challenges that women face that most men typically do not have to deal with. We hope to provide a place where women can grow within their field, connect with other ladies and resources, and thrive!

Our LILs may be the minority in the office, but their presence is known. (Girls run the world, right Beyonce?) There is often a stereotype in logistics because it is dominated by men however, the ladies are letting their names be known as well these days. Besides the ladies that we have in our office, we are starting to see a new trend- a lot of our customers have women running their logistics departments! We believe we are turning the corner of what may be one day an equal playing field.

We look forward to bringing you all on this journey with us.

Letter from the President

PGT Update

Things continue to evolve at PGT. Some people don’t care for change, but here we love it because without it, we will not grow and achieve our goals!

One of those changes is this post. We will be hearing an update from the president of PGT, Tony Uhrina, every month. Sometimes you’ll have to read it. Sometimes you’ll have to listen to it. But we will always provide it!

So, what’s new? Here’s what Tony had to say.

A Letter from the President

Exciting things are happening at PGT! We’ve added to our team, had record months, and made big strides in the freight market.

In 2022, we have grown to over 20 associates! We are adding about 2 people every month to our team. We are starting to see teams formed and various departments starting to grow. It’s no secret that hiring is not easy in today’s world, so we pride ourselves on our ability to hire highly qualified, valuable associates to join our incredible team.

On the financial side of the business, we have had 3, yes THREE, record months in a row. For some, that may not seem like that big of a feat, however, in this volatile market, it is very impressive. It just goes to show we have the right people on our team!

We have taken a lot of time this year to distinguish ourselves from our competitors. We’ve always done this, but it became a primary focus when talking to our customers. It is important for them to understand that we stand by the promises we make. We’ve separated ourselves with timely, proactive communication as well as our ability to drive waste and cost out of our customers’ supply chains. We continue to grow North American truckload volume at a rapid pace by delivering our value proposition consistently across our operation.

We have big plans for the future as well. PGT will continue to focus on technology initiatives that will drive efficiency for our associates, customers, and carriers. Flexibility is the name of the game for us. Our ability to adapt and shift has enabled us to thrive in the ever-changing freight market.

I sincerely believe the PGT team, alongside our customers and carriers, are set up for tremendous success. Great people make great things happen!

Kind Regards,

Tony Uhrina

Power of PGT with Kandra & Jenn

How PGT has impacted their lives

You’ve heard from a few of our associates on what they like about PGT and why they enjoy working here. Today, Kandra and Jenn decided they wanted to tell you their stories together.

The video today is them talking to each other (and you) about how the jump from their previous job to a career with PGT was the best decision for them. They explain what they like about it, and what keeps them coming back for more- even with an hour+ commute every day.

Give it a listen!

Meet Brandon

A Logistics Man

He must love it since he’s been doing it for every bit of four years at this point. Brandon Cliffe joined our team at the start of 2022 and has been a go-getter ever since. Why? “I just enjoy every minute of being in logistics,” he explained.

Before breaking into the industry, Brandon attended the University of Cincinnati (Go Bearcats!) like several others in our office. Outside of work, Brandon is a family guy. He is marrying his fiancé next month and is excited to celebrate with their kids. He has two kids, a four-year-old son and a one-year-old daughter. Brandon enjoys spending time with them and watching them grow up. When he has the chance – free time is often hard to come by – he loves to golf.

Brandon takes pride in helping our customers with honesty and integrity. “I wholeheartedly believe that we provide a fantastic service by helping our customers with their supply chain and bringing drivers home safely to their families,” Brandon stated. “We are the bridge between shippers/manufacturers and the carriers who haul the loads.”

Brandon enjoys the camaraderie and relationships he’s built with customers and co-workers at PGT.

“We are a tight nit group,” he said referencing the PGT staff. “The culture here is amazing.”

What motives Brandon? It’s simple- family and money. That motivation is rooted in everything money provides for him and his family and the opportunities and freedoms that come along with it. “I just want to provide for my family and experience life with them in whatever direction that takes us.”

Armed Forces Day

Thank-you, Soliders

Any day dedicated to honoring members of the United States military is a great day. Today we honor those currently serving our country.

All of us at PGT are screaming THANK-YOU! We know “thank-you” will never be enough, so we try to live each day in your honor. Words cannot express our gratitude for all of your sacrifices and commitment to preserving the freedoms we often take for granted. While today is the official day for honoring our active-duty soldiers, we want you all to know that we appreciate you and pray for you every single day.

Thank-you for your service.

Thank-you for your dedication.

Thank-you for your commitment.

Thank-you for your fight.

Thank-you for your protection.

Thank-you for your sacrifice.

Thank-you for your valor.

Thank-you for our freedoms.

Thank-you for defending our rights.

Thank-you for YOU.

We have a few veterans in our office who wanted to give a special shout out to their fellow soldiers.

“I would like to thank all the service members who are currently serving this great country. Just as importantly, I would like to thank all the people who sit at home and worry, support, love and pray for the fine men and women who wear the uniform. The sacrifice doesn’t end with the solider. Many loved ones carry the same burden. Thank-you for your unending love and support while they are serving and for accepting them home with open arms. To me, the greatest heroes are the ones at home waiting with open arms and hearts for their solider to return safely.”

Paul Vezina, National Account Manager, served in the Army for 5 years and did 2 tours in Iraq.

“There are a lot of brave men and women serving our great country. I am proud to have been one of them. I would like to take a minute to thank the soldiers out there protecting our great country. I know first hand the sacrifice you make every day to ensure the people of the United States continue to live free.

Thank-you for your service, today and every day. There are no greater heroes than those that serve their country and the ones they leave back home.”

Rob Johnson, National Account Manager, served in the Army for 11 years.

Mental Health

Mental Health Awareness Month

When most people hear the word “health” they think of physical health- how much do you weigh, how in shape are you, do you have allergies or is it something worse?

This month, the focus is on mental health, arguably, the more important of the two. Everyone’s mental health is extremely important as they navigate through every day life. While it comes easier to some than others, it is something everyone needs to spend time prioritizing.

How you do that is entirely dependent on you and your needs.

One thing is for certain: struggling with your mental health is NOTHING to be ashamed of…EVER!

All of us at PGT understand this and make it a priority in our lives. It is something we talk about openly and work together to improve our mental health daily. Our jobs, like every job, can have good and bad days. The team atmosphere and family-like environment help everyone feel comfortable with expressing how they feel and making sure everyone is okay. Everyone here truly cares about the person sitting next to them, and across from them, and on the other side (you get the point).

“Vulnerability sounds like truth and feels like courage. Truth and courage aren’t always comfortable, but they’re never a weakness.”

-Brene Brown-

We are willing to help in any way we can. We’ve done it many times in our short two years as a company, and we are always willing to work together to overcome those mental challenges someone is facing. “I know first hand. It was so hard to talk about and explain at first. I tried to hide it and realized I couldn’t,” Kandra explained. “I was ashamed because I felt like I was the only one having problems, but it wasn’t helping anyone by me avoiding the issue.”

Kandra took a leap of faith on us when she chose to join our team, it is only right for us to return that trust and help her wherever we could. “It really is incredible what a little bit of understanding can do for a person,” Cassie, Director of Administration, said in regards to Kandra’s improvement. “We worked together- even when it was hard for both Kandra and the company- but a little help can go a long way. She took the time she needed and has improved her mental health a great deal in the year she’s been here.”

The stigma surrounding mental health doesn’t help the situation. The country as a whole is finally starting to bring awareness to a very common problem, but ultimately, we all have to take our own mental health into our own control.

According to mentalhealth.org, some ways to improve your mental health are:

  • Talk about your feelings- find a friend, family member, therapist. Anyone, really.
  • Stay active- exercise helps your focus, sleep, and concentration.
  • Eat well- absorb nutrients to help organ function (including your brain).
  • Drink sensibly- when it comes to alcohol, don’t drink it to change your mood.
  • Ask for help- professional help if necessary.
  • Take a break- change of pace or scenery is good, regardless of how long (5 minutes or 5 days, it doesn’t matter)
  • Do something you’re good at- hobbies and activities you enjoy and are good at boosts self-esteem.
  • Accept who you are- everyone’s different, that’s what makes it fun!
  • Care for others- be kind. It’s that’s simple.

“Everyone is going through something. Just because you can’t see it, doesn’t mean they aren’t struggling. Be kind. Be supportive,” Kandra explained. “Mental health problems don’t define someone. They aren’t who they are, the problems are just something they are experiencing.”

Power of PGT with Chad

Funny Guy Strikes Again

We can tell you everything you want to hear about PGT over and over until we are blue in the face.

What Separates PGT?

Why PGT Stands Out?

There are several ways PGT differentiates ourselves from the rest- on both the associate and customer levels.

We’ve talked about several of those things in our previous blogs, but in today’s Table Talk, they try to break it down differently. Give it a listen.
